To the Editor:

There have been many complaints that South Lake Shore Drive has become a speedway, but during the evening rush hour the pedestrian path next to it becomes an alternate speedway. Motorcycles and even four-wheel All Terrain Vehicles zoom down the walkway at 40 mph, weaving in and out of family groups with small children.

People are afraid to call police. I'm afraid to call police. I walk along the lakefront almost every day, and I fear retaliation. Some of these riders will threaten you if you even dare to look at them. You have to pretend you don't see them.

What can be done? I believe a tragedy is likely to occur on the pedestrian path. Does anyone have suggestions on how to prevent it?
