To the Editor:

During the April 21, 2021 Chicago City Council Meeting, the long-awaited "Kenwood Link," a state-of-the-art pedway connecting the main high school campus to the academic center, was approved.

Championed by Principal Karen Calloway, her administrative team, 4th Ward Alderman Sophia King, Chicago Public Schools and the Kenwood LSC, this $9.2 million capital improvement investment is rooted in equity, safety and wellness, along with an enriched educational experience.

In tandem with the pedway, this timely capital project includes the installation of a high efficiency new rooftop heating and cooling system for the Kenwood gymnasium and is anchored by a beautification landscaping capstone, slated to be completed by the end of 2022. The funding will be derived from the 53rd Street Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District.

As a collective body committed to aligning the Kenwood school community with the highest instructional quality, a safe and stimulating learning environment, fiscal stewardship and peerless college/career readiness, the Kenwood LSC is pleased to laud Principal Calloway for her relentless advocacy for this pedway, coupled with her innovative vision for grooming our next generation of world changers. Likewise, we applaud Alderman King for her unbridled support of Kenwood Academy and acute consciousness of viable funding streams.

As a footnote, Kenwood Academy is the only institution in the Chicago Public School portfolio that does not have a pedway, bridging the main campus to their corresponding academic center. The pursuit of parity for Kenwood students has a long history, which is why this victory represents an outstanding accomplishment.

Another distinguishing component of this key milestone is the expression of greater diversity and inclusion. Nia Architects, an African American owned architecture firm has been tapped for the concept and design of the pedway.

Thank you and Congratulations again to Principal Calloway and team for yet another WIN for the Kenwood Family!!!!! Go Broncos!!! Let’s be sure to amplify this good news to help strengthen our scholars.

We encourage all Kenwood stakeholders to participate in our monthly LSC meetings, held on every second Tuesday at 6 p.m. For additional information, visit:
