Workers repair water main along the 5300 block of South Blackstone Avenue.

At around 2 p.m. on Tuesday, the Department of Water Management (DWM) lifted a boil water advisory for certain buildings on the 1400 block of East 53rd Street and the 5300 block of South Blackstone Avenue put in place for water main work.

“Whenever we’re replacing a main or moving water infrastructure, it isn’t unusual that we could have a boil order because, out of an abundance of caution, if water isn’t moving as quickly as it should be through a main, that it’s completely safe,” said Megan Vidis with the DWM. “We have people boil their water for drinking and cooking before we get our lab results back proving that all is good.”

The order was issued on March 23 in conjunction with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the Chicago Department of Public Health.
